The VGB Act: A Pain in the Drain?
Speaker: Paul Pennington, Founder and Chairman of Pool Safety
Mr. Pennington will discuss common misconceptions about the implementation and enforcement of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act. Included will be a brief history on the formation of the law, what is required for public pools to come into compliance, how the devices and systems designed to prevent entrapment as required by the VGB Act work, and which applications they are appropriate to be installed on a pool or spa. A version of this same presentation has been used to train various State-level health and building officials, and through that feedback, Mr. Pennington will discuss what health officials are specifically looking for when conducting inspections on public pools and spas.

Kathleen Reilly will discuss CPSC’s Pool Safely campaign and bring you up to date on our activities, partnerships and outlook for 2011. She will have information on hand about the campaign’s education and training efforts, including training materials and online tools. Carvin DiGiovanni will provide an overview of APSP VGB initiatives.

The Pool & Spa Safety Act - Suction Fitting Inspections

Many residential and all public pools suction fittings were modified in response to the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act. Unfortunately ""cover swapping"" was commonplace and these installations may not be compliant. This seminar will focus on the inspection points of to consider for all suction fittings as well as verifying existing installations to the ANSI/APSP-7 Appendix D. Proper installation can be achieved using a stepwise approach.

It will address the difference between ""VGB Compliant"" and ""VGB Certified"", explain which sumps need to be certified by a Registered Design Professional and site the sections of the ASMEA112.19.8-2007 VGB standard that govern this subject.
