This session will showcase a show and tell of the prescriptive IRC code options for fasteners, fastener locations on ledger, and fastener spacing based on joist span, explanation of the code span table, and comparison with structural screws.

 Limitations of IRC options:

  • Pilot and clearance holes required 
  • 2018 and previous IRC versions have maximum of 40 psf Live load

  • Easier to set ledger one step from interior floor level

One of the leading contributors to deck collapses is the decay of the supporting structure - namely the rim joist of the house - due to poorly detailed or damaged deck ledger flashing. Review the building code requirements for ledger flashing. 

Learn how to protect the wall behind the ledger and flash over the top to block and redirect water onto the face of the ledger and cladding at three critical areas. 

See alternative flashing designs and how important the wall leg height can be depending on the type of siding is installed on the house and different ways to approach spacing the ledger off the wall to avoid flashing altogether. 

And examine at a flashing approach to seal cantilevering deck/balcony joists where they penetrate through an exterior wall and WRB.

NADRA’s Deck Evaluation/Inspection Certification Program

This program will allow the industry professional the opportunity to employ the ability to safely evaluate a deck. After the Deck Evaluation Class, the individual will understand how to analyze the following deck components, issues, and more: stairs, footings and posts, joists, joist connections, girders, ledger connections, deck boards, handrail assemblies and guards, recognize proper and improper fasteners, assess hardware or material corrosion, review of the safety standards of all (decks, stairs, guards) structures.
